Our History

Harry H. Lipsig (1901 – 1995)

Mr. Lipsig established the firm in 1989. Often referred to as “The King of Torts”, he was called “the toughest, most successful personal injury specialist in the country.” by New York Magazine.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Mr. Lipsig repeatedly set new legal standards which ultimately contributed to the expanding horizon of the law. He was instrumental in winning hundreds of millions of dollars in verdicts for his clients and devoted his life to securing compensation for them.

Mr. Lipsig’s long and distinguished career came to a close with his death in 1995. His passing was announced in newspapers around the country.

For decades, the attorneys of the Lipsig Law Firm have helped thousands of injury victims secure the compensation they deserve. Our philosophy is simple, and has remained unchanged over years of trial experience: recover the maximum amount to which our clients are entitled. Our focus is your recovery, and our only goal to see that you are properly cared for in your time of need.

A History In Personal Injury, A Legacy Of Success

The story of the Lipsig Law Firm begins with our founder, Harry H. Lipsig, a true titan in the world of New York personal injury law. Mr. Lipsig devoted his life to representing the rights of injured New Yorkers, and the firm continues to uphold his undying commitment to justice for all.

A prolific litigator, Mr. Lipsig truly earned the title of “The King of Torts.” By the time of his death, he’d secured hundreds of millions in settlements and court awards over a legal career spanning six decades. Famously eloquent and doggedly tenacious, Mr. Lipsig was honored by New York Magazine as “the toughest, most successful personal injury specialist in the country.” But Mr. Lipsig was as influential as he was successful: many of his cases shaped the very legal standards under which negligence claims are fought today.

Harry Lipsig’s death in 1995 was honored in obituaries across the nation, but his legacy remains as vibrant as ever.

Our Personal Injury Lawyers

Lipsig Law Firm is just as strong as it was before Harry Lipsig’s passing. Many of our current litigators worked alongside Harry, learning daily from his decades of experience. We’re still devoted to the mission that he established so many years ago: secure the most for those who need it the most.

Alan M. Shapey, Esq.

Over 30 years of trial experience, Alan M. Shapey has recovered multi-million dollar verdicts in news-making cases. Mr. Shapey’s practice is focused on catastrophic injuries and matters of complex liability, claims requiring a particularly nuanced approach to negligence law. His most resounding successes have involved infant lead poisoning, product liability claims against car manufacturers, train accidents involving the New York Transit Authority system, municipal liability and construction accidents.

Mr. Shapey maintains a robust trial practice, and continues to represent injury victims throughout the city. He’s also routinely chosen as a visiting lecturer for the American Trial Lawyers Association and the New York State Trial Lawyers Association.

In addition, Mr. Shapey has successfully conducted complex and challenging jury trials on behalf of clients of the Lipsig Law firm with one recently in Brooklyn.

In a recent trial in Brooklyn, Alan Shapey was able to prove to a jury that a new condo building developer was partially responsible for damages suffered by the Lipsig Law firm client. Our client, who was attending a party in the building, climbed onto a parapet wall surrounding the roof of a residential condominium building in Williamsburg and then fell 70 feet into an alley alongside the roof.

The developer had divided the roof into separate recreational areas (with their own barbeques, electricity and water) that were sold as condominiums and included a large common area for use by the condominium owners and their guests. The roof was zoned for recreational purposes. Alan Shapey, working with experts in building construction, design and safety regulations, identified the NYC Building Code regulation that required a ten-foot wire fences on roofs used for recreational purposes, not the 3 ½ foot high parapet wall that the developer provided. The jury in Brooklyn agreed that the developer was negligent for not complying with the applicable Building Code rule by not constructing the ten-foot fence around the roof and it found that the developer was 60% at fault for the fall incident.
